「History」
John Adams was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in 1823. At the age of 14 be began working in the glass manufacturing business. Opening his factory in 1851 and by developing a technique utilizing lime in place of lead to make glass, he significantly lowered the cost of glass production. Utilizing this process, by 1861 he turned his glass factory in Pittsburgh into one of the largest and most successful operations in Pittsburgh.

In 1891 the company merged into the United States Glass Co., otherwise known as U.S. Glass, as "Factory A". In 1892, 5 years after his death, his sons sold their holdings in Adams & Company (also known as Adams Glass).

With a company life of only 31 years and a commemoration of the Centennial of the Declaration of Independence this Water Goblet / Wine Glass is an amazing piece of history! It bears embossing of "100 Years Ago", the Liberty Bell, "1776 1876" and a banner reading "Declaration of Independence".

The pattern was probably produced for the Philadelphia International Exhibition of 1876, which was the first official World's Fair in the United States. It was held from May 10 to November 10, 1876, in Pennsylvania to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia.

The process of the time for making these pieces was to blown glass into a preformed mold ......so each piece has unique characteristics; air bubbles, uneven seams, slight dimensional variations, embossing imperfections and some sharp edges. However, all these personality flaws just make 142 years of glass all the more wonderful!! This Goblet glows a wonderful yellow-green color when exposed to black light - so it is Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG); produced between 1850 and 1917.
